An organic vegetable farm that works with nature and the community

Valley Dream Farm’s fields and forest extend from the base of Mt. Mansfield in the idyllic Pleasant Valley. The Seymour River flows through Valley Dream on its way to meet the Lamoille River, and eventually Lake Champlain.

With organic vegetables growing in the fields and flowers blooming all summer, the farm offers many delights. Visitors can buy produce at the farmstand, along with annual starts in spring and flowers all season. The farm is as bucolic as it is productive, but it’s also an example of how farms can work with nature to maintain wildlife habitat and clean water.

Farm Story: A dream come true

Anne and Joe Tisbert named their farm Valley Dream because it was their dream come true.

They bought and conserved the farm in 1992 with the help of the American Farmland Trust, who eventually transferred the ongoing stewardship of their conservation easement to us.

During the family’s first year on the farm, they got more than they bargained for when they inherited a persistent crop of invasive bindweed and nutsedge.

With their fields so close to the river that also provided their drinking water, the parents of four children were hesitant to address the problem with herbicides.

“Our water comes from the aquifer under this farm,” said Anne. “I don’t want to contaminate it. I don’t want to destroy it.”

Instead, they found an organic solution, and they’ve been an organic operation ever since. By the late ‘90s, they transitioned the farm from dairy to vegetables.

Veggies, flowers, weddings, and farm-to-table dinners with a view

The Tisberts grow potatoes, cucumbers, kale, and other organic vegetables for Deep Root Organic Co-op, which supplies local and regional markets.

Visitors can shop at the seasonal farmstand and annual starts are available each spring in the greenhouse.

An online ordering option with pick-up at the farm is also offered.

Locals and visitors can share in the harvest and connect with the community at one of the weekly farm-to-table dinners the family hosts between late June and October.

And for those who want a spectacular site for their wedding or special event, the Tisberts rent out a field below a unique vista of Mt. Mansfield.

One of the Tisbert’s daughters, Becky, co-runs a floristry business on site called Snaps and Sunflowers.

Visitors and CSA members can pick up or pick their own flowers or hire her company to decorate weddings and special events. Becky also sells flowers wholesale.

Trails, clean water, and flood safety: A farm in service to the community

From naming fields after neighbors to partnering with the local Brewster River Mountain Bike Club to maintain a mountain biking trail on their land, the Tisberts are deeply engaged in the local community

In addition to conserving their land and protecting its excellent farm soils, the the family has also protected the wetlands, river and stream areas.

They did this to make sure the water would remain clean and the community downriver would benefit from the protected floodplain located on their farm, which slows water during big storms.
