This Route 7 farmstand has been offering local food for over 50 years

Wood’s Market Garden is an organic produce farm and seasonal store in Brandon, Vermont. The “farmstand by the pond” has been around since the ’70s and is open daily throughout the season, selling annuals, veggies, and fruits grown on site, plus local meats, cheese, and much more.

The Green Mountains serve as a backdrop to the farm, which is off Route 7 between Middlebury and Rutland. Directly south of the farmstand lies the lilypad-laden Jones Mill Pond. The pond and a section of Jones Brook that runs through the property provide irrigation for the farm.

The farmstand is now run by Dan and Elyse Wulfkuhle, who bought the farm in 2023.

Serving up produce and local products

In season, the farmstand’s tree-lined front yard is filled with flowers, annual plants, and veggie starts.

Inside the store, all kinds of fresh produce and local products are on display, from Dan’s organic corn and tomatoes to meat pies, ice cream, and crafts.

Locals can also sign up for the farm’s CSA program, which lets members shop at the farmstand when they choose, and purchase anything sold there.

The farm's history

Wood’s Market Garden is named for the Wood family, who began farming the land in the early 1900s. In the 1970s, Bob and Sally Wood opened a roadside farmstand that soon became a beloved community hub.

The Woods befriended their organic farm inspector, Jon Satz, who bought and conserved the farm with VLT in 2000.

Jon (pictured here in 2008) brought energy and a passion for sustainable growing practices to the farm. Sadly, he passed before his time in 2021. And while the land had been protected from being developed, its productivity as a farm wasn’t.

Because of conservation, Vermont is a destination for new farmers

Dan and Elyse, who previously lived in Washington state, had been searching for the right farm for six years. Vermont came up again and again – in part, because of its support for farmers.

In 2023, with help from a private donor and the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board, we stepped in to provide a second round of legal conservation protections that enabled Dan and Elyse to buy the farm and ensure that it would remain a farm — this time, for good. As part of this, 57 acres were newly conserved and wetland areas were protected.

“As a first farm, sometimes it can be a little bit hard to just get your foot in the door,” said Dan. “One reason we were drawn to Vermont is because of VLT. There’s no way we would have been able to buy the farm without them.”

In 2023, when they re-opened the Route 7 farmstand, the community gave them an enthusiastic welcome.

The farmstand is open every day from May through early fall. There you will find plants, organic produce, flowers, local cheese, meat, dairy, baked goods, fruit, syrup.
