Meet our new Watershed Specialist and Restoration Project Manager

We are pleased to announce that our Ecology & Restoration Program has grown! The program has expanded its staff this year, reflecting the critical need for not only understanding our riverscapes but strengthening their resilience. Thanks to support from government agencies and funding partners, we now employ two additional staff who increase our capacity to do this work.

Elijah Schumacher, Watershed Specialist

Elijah leads the Vermont Process-Based Restoration Network, a statewide initiative for natural resource professionals working in Vermont’s riverscapes. He also leads surface water planning, wetland and ecological assessments, and works on restoration projects on land conserved with VLT, to support the ecological health of working lands.

Before joining our restoration team earlier this year, Elijah spent four years as a Wetland Ecologist for the state Wetlands Program, working with landowners and developing his skills in wetland delineation, surface water mapping, restoration planning, and botany. He has also worked on a variety of other projects ranging from small-scale farming to introduced species control in Vermont, Kauai’i, Oregon, and New Hampshire.

Kyle Birrer, Restoration Project Manager

Kyle leads the development, design, funding, implementation, and monitoring of complex ecological restoration projects that advance flood and climate resilience, water quality, natural hydrologic function, and biodiversity on conserved lands across the state.

Kyle came to VLT in 2023 as an ECO AmeriCorps member, serving two terms through the program in the Restoration Department, and continued his work with VLT this past year as an Ecological Restoration Fellow.

Kyle holds a degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Vermont and a GIS Certificate from Penn State University.

The role of stream, wetland, and river restoration

VLT is integrating ecological restoration into its decades-long work of land protection to promote resilience. The program builds on the foundation of protected land, identifying potential sites in need of active restoration, designing suitable projects, securing funding, and implementing the work on the ground.

Restoration projects are undertaken in collaboration with private and other landowners, as well as multiple partners who share our mission to boost the resilience of Vermont’s watersheds and also its communities.
