Our guide to local Nordic and backcountry ski areas
Strap on your skis and experience the best of Vermont winter — through mellow fields and deep woods — at these beloved Nordic and backcountry destinations.
Whether you enjoy breaking trail or skating along freshly groomed corduroy, Vermont’s conserved lands offer some of the most memorable winter experiences around. No matter your skill level, these centers offer a chance to explore — from gentle winding trails to challenging climbs with sweeping views. Not a skier? Many also welcome snowshoers to traverse the woods and fields.
Wherever you are in Vermont, a winter adventure isn’t far away.
In the far southwest corner, Prospect Mountain boasts 30 kilometers of groomed trails and the highest base elevation of any alpine or cross-country ski area in Vermont. At the other end of the state, NorthWoods Stewardship Center maintains more than 20 kilometers of groomed and backcountry trails.
Closer to Vermont’s busiest population centers, two longtime favorites — Catamount Outdoor Family Center at the Catamount Community Forest and Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry — offer 40 and 100 kilometers of trails, respectively.
In central Vermont, the Millstone Trails Association grooms portions of its 30-kilometer network at the Barre Town Forest for winter use, winding through a historic and beautifully varied landscape.
Before you head out, please note that some centers require day or season passes. Be sure to check each center’s website for current trail conditions and pass details.
