We did it! We are thrilled to announce that we have met our goal of raising $120,000 to help expand and conserve the Hinesburg Town Forest!

Thanks to our dedicated volunteer committee, more than 100 members of the community made donations to support this project. We are no longer actively fundraising. Any gifts in transit will be added to the Hinesburg Town Forest Management Fund, which will provide for things like trail work, erosion control, parking maintenance/upgrades, and more. If you have questions, please contact Kate Shaw, kate@vlt.org.

The Town of Hinesburg will now be able to add 291 acres to the existing 834-acre Hinesburg Town Forest and permanently protect the resulting 1,125 acres for the enjoyment of residents and visitors for generations to come.

A treasured community asset, the Hinesburg Town Forest draws visitors from near and far — for, outdoor education, recreation, hunting, community events to learn about forestry, and much more. The land proposed for the expansion has existing trails that connect seamlessly to those in the town forest, and can provide access to the forest from the south.

The Carse land and the existing Town Forest are located in a 4,400-acre stretch of connected forestland identified as a priority for conservation by the Vermont Conservation Design. With streams, wetlands, vernal pools, and areas of forest uncommon in Vermont — with Red Oak and White Pine trees — the land is also rich in habitat.

The Carse family is offering the property first to the Town before listing it on the open market. Let’s not pass up the chance to enrich and protect this beloved forest.

The total cost to buy the Carse land and conserve the expanded 1,125-acre Hinesburg Town Forest is $420,000, including a management fund for trail work, bridges, boardwalks, signage, parking, or other needs.

A grant of $225,000 has been secured from the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board, the Town of Hinesburg has pledged $20,000, and the Vermont Land Trust is putting in $55,000. During the fundraising phase, a generous Hinesburg resident matched gifts up to a total of $20,000.
